DOTHAN CITY:On December 7, 1914, Officer Hugh DeShazo was shot and killed by a man while walking his beat. He stopped at a local grocery store to use the phone when a man entered and shot him four times.
The 45-year-old suspect, who pleaded insanity, was convicted of first degree murder, and sentenced to life. He was paroled on March 21, 1923 and later pardoned by the Governor. Officer DeShazo had served with the agency for only 1 month. He was survived by his wife and three children. We honor and remember Officer DeShazo
On January 31, 1978, Sergeant Robert Jackson was assassinated in the driveway of his home as he got out of his car at 10:00 pm.
He was assigned to the narcotics division and it is believed he was murdered because of his work in arresting drug dealers. The suspect were never identified and the case remains open.
Sergeant Jackson had been a member of the Dothan Police Department for almost seven years, and is survived by his wife and children. Sergeant Jackson was promoted posthumously to Lieutenant. We remember and honor Sergeant Jackson.
On January 19, 1985, Corporal Robert Armstrong was killed when his patrol car was struck head-on by a drunk driver on Ross Clark Circle while he was working an overtime DUI enforcement program at 4:30 pm.
The drunk driver was driving the wrong way on the four-lane divided highway when the collision occurred. Both Corporal Armstrong and the drunk driver were transported to a local hospital where they both died. The suspect had previous DUI arrests.
Corporal Armstrong had been employed with the Dothan Police Department for almost seven years, and is survived by his wife and daughter. We honor and remember Corporal Robert Armstrong.
On November 9, 1970, Sergeant Shelby Owens was killed in a motorcycle accident while en route to escort a funeral procession.
He had just finished an escort and was headed towards the second funeral when a car pulled in front of him. The driver of the other car was not charged.
Sergeant Owens had been employed with the Dothan Police Department for 20 years, and is survived by his son. We honor and remember Sergeant Owens.
