DOTHAN: TOPS - The Ordinary People's Society - held their annual Founder's and Unity Celebration this past Saturday night.
TOPS was founded 21 years ago by Pastor Kenneth Glasgow. It's purpose is to focus on prison rights, voting rights and the criminal justice system.
A soup kitchen was established when the non profit organization was founded. The soup kitchen is named after the guiding light of Kennth Glasgow, his mother - MOMA TINA.
Each week, Monday through Friday, Moma Tina's soup kitchen feeds those who are homeless and hungry. They can get a get meal, free, to help them out.
TOPS helps those who are homeless. They help search and find them permanent housing and get back on their feet. TOPS said homeless is a problem in Dothan and the wiregrass area, and a growing problem.
TOPS Executive Director is Rodreshia Russaw. Through TOPS Ms. Russaw works to give people a second chance at life. At Mother's Day, Russaw, through her work with TOPS, has a project that helps mother's solve their legal issue. Those issues might be getting the mother released from jail, pointing them in the right direction to someone who can resolve their issue so the mother is not looking over their shoulder fearful of contact with law enforcement. Russaw said mother's fearful of arrest and the possibilty of loosing their children is a driving force behind TOPS problem to assist the mother in the right direction of life and getting her issues resolved. Russaw said often times the solution is as simple as getting someone on a payment plan that owes the court money.
The celebration on Saturday, the featured guest speaker was Alabama State Representative Dexter Grimsley.
