WESTVILLE – Holmes County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a Westville couple on charges of animal cruelty after responding to their home in reference to a separate complaint.
Deputies arrived at 1478 Peak Road shortly after 2 p.m. Monday, August 5, to make contact with the home’s occupants, 55-year-old Ferrell D. Godfrey and 60-year-old Marianne L. Godfrey, in reference to another case.
During the course of the contact, deputies observed about 90 dogs present at the residence, many of which were chained to trees or crowded together in an outside pen with no access to fresh food or water.
Many of the animals appeared to be severly malnourished and/or seriously injured and suffering from mange or untreated wounds.
Mr. and Mrs. Godfrey are each charged with felony animal cruelty.
Alaqua Animal Refuge in Freeport was contacted and is currently assisting HCSO with this case.
Those who suspect a dog belonging to them may have been at this home and/or those wishing to make a donation toward their care should contact Alaqua Animal Refuge. Please allow a few days for the animals to be evaluated and accounted for by the organization.
