DOTHAN:   After several years of turmoil at the Dothan School Board meetings RSN made a decision that watching the paint dry was time better spent then attending those meetings.

But I must say that Dothan School Board Chairman Mike Schmitz and the majority of the members of the Dothan School Board has made two good decisions recently.

RSN is going to get the complaints. But since Dr. Dennis Coe became Interim Dothan School Superintendent, I have not received complaints within the Dothan City School system.

So quite naturally Chairman Schmitz and members of the School Board made the right decision in hiring Dr. Coe fulltime.

Dr. Dennis Coe is looking after the children

On Monday Dothan School Superintendent Dennis Coe announced a contract with retired Dothan Police Chief Steve Parrish to head the security plan for all Dothan City Schools.

That is a great thing by Dr. Coe, Chairman Schmitz and the Dothan School Board. Retired Police Chief Steve Parrish brings to the table a vast amount of knowledge in law enforcement, protection of others, and quite honestly, a "get of the box and be creative" thinker.

Chief Parrish was not a Police Chief willing to sit and click years until retirement. He was one who wanted to leave a positive impact on the Dothan Police Department. But it was never about "Steve Parrish" getting credit, but about making things better.

While serving as Dothan Police Chief, it was Steve Parrish who was creative in school protection officers. A lot of behind the scene work to make this happen. The School Protection Officers are not the same as School Resource Officers.

The School Protection Officers are law enforcement officers, mostly retired working part time, with one goal in mind. STOPPING anyone from getting hurt by someone with bad intentions. Not sugar coating it, not pampering, but the immediate STOP, sudden stop, before any child, teacher or visitor gets hurt or injured.

Great move on behalf of Dr. Coe, Chairman Schmitz and members of the Dothan School Board.
