On August 4, 2019 at approximately 4:10am, Geneva County Sheriff’s deputies and officers with the Geneva Police Department were dispatched to Wiregrass Medical Center, in reference to a black female with a gunshot wound to the head. Deputies and Officers determined that the incident took place on Buck Holland Road, south of Geneva. Inv Dean and Sheriff Helms were notified and responded to the scene.
Geneva County Deputies were able to locate and secure the crime scene, as well as determine a potential suspect. Investigators and Deputies worked the scene and was able to recover evidence of the shooting. Through interviews and evidence, Billy Wayne Coffey, was determined to be the suspect. It is believed that Mr. Coffey was at his residence at approximately 4:00am, when an incident took place where two white males were seen entering his yard, knocking on his door, and fleeing from the residence. Mr. Coffey exited his residence, with firearm in hand and fired a “warning shot”. It is believed that Mr. Coffey then entered the roadway, where he was blocking the travel of a vehicle, that he assumed the two white males had got in. The vehicle was able to maneuver around Mr. Coffee and at that time, through physical evidence, it is believed that Mr. Coffee fired a single round. The single round went into the vehicle, striking the victim in the back of the head. Victim was transported straight to Wiregrass Medical Center by a passenger in the vehicle, where she underwent treatment before being transported to Sacred Heart Hospital. It was determined that the victim nor her passengers, were associated with the incident that took place at Mr. Coffey’s residence.
Mr. Coffey has been charged with Attempted Murder and Shooting into an Occupied Vehicle and is awaiting First Appearance in the Geneva County Jail. At this time, the investigation is still ongoing.
