The latest omnibus spending package approved by Congress, but not yet signed by President Donald Trump, included millions of dollars to assist the Port of Mobile with ongoing dredging projects. It also included the addition of the same type of warship typically built at Austal USA’s Mobile facility.
Millions more went for funding for military bases in the Wiregrass, space exploration and defense spending in Huntsville and medical research on universities campuses throughout the state.
The massive 2021 federal appropriations plan, according to political observers and politicians, underscored the power and influence on Capitol Hill of Alabama’s longest-serving senator, Richard Shelby, even if the entire package remained in limbo as of Sunday. Trump trashed the $1.4 trillion package on Tuesday for not providing enough money in direct payments to Americans struggling through the COVID-19 pandemic. He encouraged senators to get rid of the “pork.”
With Shelby’s political life coming to a possible end within two years, political observers are also harkening on the phrase: You don’t know what you got until its gone.
