Alan Robert Balmer, passed away peacefully on December 2, 2023, in Dothan, Alabama, at the age of 84. Born on August 13, 1939, in Elmira, New York, Alan's early life was marked by a keen interest in learning and a profound ability to understand complex mathematical concepts.








Alan earned a Merritt Scholarship to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he honed his skills and laid the foundation for a successful career as a software engineer and his contributions to the field were significant.


Alan served his country with distinction as an Army veteran. Math and computers remained a central part of his life until his final days.


Those who knew Alan best would describe him as an intelligent, interesting, and selfless individual. His presence was a source of comfort and inspiration to many, and his legacy of kindness and generosity will live on in the hearts of those he touched.


Alan was a cherished member of a loving family. He is survived by his brothers, Dale Balmer (Bonnie) and Donn Balmer (Laura); his sisters, Carol Balmer and Alison Pringle; and many special nieces and nephews, including Jody and Currinn. Alan's life was enriched by the love and companionship of his late wife, Yong Ja Balmer, who preceded him in death. He was also predeceased by his parents, Glenn and Frances Balmer; and his sister, Joan Kantrowitz.
