SHORTERVILLE. . .Ann Smith Barnes, a resident of Shorterville, died early Friday morning, August 20, 2021, at her home, surrounded by her loving family. She was 90.


   Graveside services for friends and family will be held at 11:30 A.M. Monday, August 23, 2021, in the Adoniram Baptist Church Cemetery with Reverend Otis Derrah officiating and a eulogy to be given by David Money. Holman-Abbeville Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends following the graveside services. Social distancing and mask guidelines will be observed.


   Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Resource Center, P.O. Box 1170, Dothan, AL 36302.


   Mrs. Barnes was born and reared in Henry County, daughter of the late William Howard Smith and Flossie Mae Williams Smith. She lived in the Barnes Community of Henry County all her adult lifetime. Mrs. Barnes was a member of the Adoniram Baptist Church and the Barnes Homemakers Club. She served as an officer with the Henry County Extension Homemakers Council and was an officer with the National Rural Letter Carriers Auxiliary. Mrs. Barnes was preceded in death by two sisters, Martha Craft and Jean Bearden.


   Surviving relatives include her husband of seventy-three years, James Lawrence Barnes; two daughters, Pam Thomas (Jim), Dothan; and Linda Waters (Bob), Birmingham; a son, Dale Barnes (Elaine), Abbeville; a sister, Janice Smith, Abbeville; her step-mother, Flora Smith, Cordele, GA; a half-sister, Gabby Cannon, (Phil), Vienna, GA; a half-brother, William S. Smith (Stacey), Vienna, GA; eight grandchildren, Jeff Waters (Misty), Philip Waters (Jill), Clay Barnes, Brooks Barnes (Sheri), Lauren Benak (Joseph), Maribeth Thomas, Cade Thomas and Taylor Thomas; thirteen great-grandchildren.


   Serving as active pallbearers will be the grandsons.


   The family would like to express their appreciation to Ruth Lawrence and Rebecca Murry for the loving care and kindness shown to Mrs. Barnes during her illness.
