It is with profound sorrow and immense love that we mourn the passing of Arthur “Art” Redding Solomon, age 73, of Dothan, Alabama, who left us peacefully on Sunday, April 7. He was a devoted son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many and will be greatly missed by those who love him. In his final years, Art displayed immeasurable strength and resilience, defying all odds, and surviving nearly three years after his glioblastoma diagnosis. His journey was a source of inspiration to many, demonstrating the power of his faith and the strength of his spirit. Throughout his battle, he was supported by the love of his life, his wife of fifty-one years, Jeanie, his family, and dear friends.
Born in Headland, Alabama, on February 10, 1951, as the third child of Emory “Em” Redding and Elsie Claire Burdeshaw Solomon, Art embodied the virtues of kindness, perseverance, and creativity as a child. In high school, he was the Salutatorian of his class, a football and basketball player, distinguished in academics and sports. Following in his father’s footsteps, Art enrolled at Auburn University, where he received a degree in Industrial Engineering and was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. Upon graduation in 1973, Art decided to chart his own course and established his own photography business. His first professional job was photographing his sister Rhoda Claire Solomon’s wedding to Robert V. “Bobby” Boone. Their wedding was just the beginning of his dedication to capturing and preserving the community’s most cherished moments and memories, one photograph at a time.
In 1974, Art opened Art Solomon Photography and was the go-to photographer in the Dothan area until his retirement in 2023. His dedication to his craft was paralleled by his commitment to the photography community, where he was respected for his artistic talent and his generosity and willingness to help others. He was the founding President of the Wiregrass Area Professional Photographers Association and an active member of the Professional Photographers of America (PPA), where he managed the volunteers for their annual conference. PPA recognized Art’s contribution with the Volunteer of the Year award in 2022. This is one example of the many accolades that he received throughout his career.
A prominent figure in Dothan’s community, he was a member of the First United Methodist Church, held the honor of being a Paul Harris Fellow in the Dothan Rotary Club, and contributed significantly to the National Peanut Festival Board for many years. He served as President in 1985 and was honored as Grand Marshal of the parade in 2023. Additionally, his involvement extended to various civic and social groups.
Art is survived by his wife, Jean Nordan Solomon, their son, Timothy Jackson (Molly Maguire) Solomon, their daughter, Jean Claire Solomon (Gregory Allen) Machamer, their daughter-in-law, Stacey Hartley Solomon; and his four grandchildren, Preston O’Neill Smith, James Redding Machamer, William Allen Machamer, and Hallie Claire Maguire Solomon; a sister, Rhoda Solomon Boone (Robert V. “Bobby” Boone), a brother, John W. Solomon (Jill) and a sister-in-law, Cheryl Solomon; Art is preceded in death by his first-born, William “Billy” Redding Solomon; his parents, Emory “Em” Redding and Elsie Claire Burdeshaw Solomon; and his brother, Ligon “Lig” T. Solomon.
The Solomon family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the Neuro-Oncology Department at UAB, especially Dr. Burt Nabors, for their compassionate care and unwavering support. They also extend their gratitude to his general physician, Dr. Paola Bass, for providing continuous guidance and comfort.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 15, at 2:00 P.M. at the First United Methodist Church and livestreamed (https://boxcast.tv/view/solomon-funeral-nzghng8op3ddvo83kwid). Dr. David R. Saliba and Bishop R. Lawson Bryan will officiate. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 1:45 P.M. in the church parlor. A private graveside service will be held in the Gardens of Memory Cemetery. Holman-Headland Mortuary is in charge of funeral arrangements.
To honor Art’s enduring legacy, the family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the William Redding Solomon Memorial Endowed Scholarship at Auburn University, Auburn University Foundation, 317 South College Street, Auburn, AL 36849-5182; the Art Solomon Yearbook Scholarship at Houston Academy, 901 Buena Vista Drive, Dothan, AL 36303; or First United Methodist Church, 1380 West Main Street, Dothan, AL 36301.
As we say goodbye to this remarkable human, we also celebrate the indelible mark he has left on our hearts and the world. May his soul rest in peace, and may his legacy live on through those he loved and the lives he touched.
