Augusta was born January 25, 1931 to John Ernest and Juanita Moody Walden. A lifetime resident of Dothan, Augusta and her family were active members of Foster Street Methodist Church and moved with their church from downtown Dothan to its present location and name change to First United Methodist Church on West Main Street. Augusta graduated from Dothan High School in 1949 and attended Huntingdon College. Augusta married her high school sweetheart, J. C. Elmore on September 24, 1950 and they were the first couple married at the new church.

The devoted couple was blessed with two children, Laurel Dianne (Laurie) and James Charles, Jr. (Jim). As a young mother of two, she returned to college and graduated from Troy State University with her BS and MS degrees in the College of Education. She enjoyed teaching many students in the Dothan City Schools (Young Junior and Carver Middle) for 34 years before her retirement. Her love of teaching was also evident as the 3 year old Sunday school teacher at First United Methodist Church for more than 30 years. She was a founding member of the Dothan chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa and remained very involved until her health began to fail. She was also a member of the Dothan-Houston County Retired Teachers Association and the Alabama Education Association.

Augusta was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Juanita Walden.

She is survived by her husband of nearly 62 years, J.C. Elmore of Dothan and her two children, Laurel Elmore Axtell (Mike) and Jim Elmore (Denise Bern); her sister, Marnita Walden Crow of Birmingham and her brother, John Ernest (JoAnn) Walden of Dothan; four grandsons, Michael Axtell, Branden (Stephanie) Axtell, Philip Axtell and Daniel Axtell; two precious granddaughters, Alexandra and Sydney Axtell; five special nieces and their families also survive.
