MSG(R) Basil Victor “Buck” Newsome of Samson passed away Tuesday, May 22, 2012 at his home. He was 88.

 

A graveside service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, May 28 at Hartford City Cemetery with Rev. Glenn Tate officiating and Sorrells Funeral Home of Geneva directing.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, 4899 Belfort Road, Suite 300, Jacksonville, FL  32256.

 

MSG(R) Newsome was born on October 2, 1923, in Geneva County AL to the late Cyril Denton and Genary Frances McDaniel Newsome.  A combat veteran of the United States Army, MSG(R) Newsome courageously served his country during World War II and the Korean Conflict where he received a Combat Infantry Badge, Purple Heart, and a Bronze Star.  He was a 32^nd Mason, Shriner and a member of the Scottish Rite, Etna Lodge, New Hope, FL.  MSG(R) Newsome was also a Ft Rucker Firefighter and the former Chief of Police for the cities of Samson and Slocomb.  MSG(R) Newsome was of the Baptist faith.

 

He was preceded in death by his wife, and the mother of his children, Edna Hardwick Newsome; one daughter, Dorothy Jean Clark; one grandson, Cecil Davis, Jr.; two sisters, Hilda Phillips and Dorothy Dorriety; three brothers, Lunice Newsome, John Lewis Newsome and Pete Newsome.

 

Survivors include his wife, Frances M. Newsome of Samson; one daughter, Faye Yongue (Wayne) of Chipley, FL; two sons, Philip Newsome of Hartford and Robert Newsome (Teresa) of Bonifay, FL; three sisters, Frances Harrison (Clifton), Mary Gilley both of Samson and Sarah Helen Ketchum Gano (Bill) of Enterprise; one brother, Earl Newsome (Merlene) of Samson; 14 grandchildren, Joy Davis, Randy Yongue (Staci), Kim McCormick (Scott), Blake Yongue, Jason Newsome (Debbie Demond), Rachel Newsome (Chris Dickey), Teddy Newsome, Jennifer Otts (James), Melissa Brannon (Craig Spivey), Joshua Newsome (Shaina), Caleb Newsome, Jennifer Maples (Willie), Erika Brown and Clarissa Adams; 18 great grandchildren, Jordan Yongue, Spencer Brannon, Kobi Brannon, Bailey Yongue, Cameron McCormick, Emily Grace Otts, Austin James Otts, Ella Demond Newsome, Taylor Maples, Trista Maples, Terra Maples, Anna Brown, Haile Brown, Zoe Newsome, Driver Spivey, Ember Spivey, Isabella Newsome, and Christian Otts; several nieces and nephews.
