DOTHAN. . .Benjamin Franklin “Benny” Jones, Jr., (Lt. Colonel, Alabama Army National Guard, Retired), a resident of Dothan, died Friday afternoon, June 23, 2023, in a Dothan hospital. He was 82.


            Graveside services, with military honors, will be held at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, June 27, 2023, in Dothan City Cemetery with Reverend Carrie Jones officiating. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends following the graveside services.


            In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Landmark Park, 430 Landmark Drive, Dothan, AL 36303 or Dothan Botanical Gardens, 5130 Headland Avenue, Dothan, AL 36303.


            Mr. Jones was born in Dothan in Moody Hospital and moved to Clayton with his family as a child. He was a 1959 graduate of Clayton High School and returned to Dothan in 1960. Mr. Jones married Peggy Fulford, July 5, 1963, celebrating 60 years of marriage this year. Mr. Jones received a B.S. Degree from Troy State University-Dothan in 1987. He served his country in the Alabama Army National, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel, after over forty years of service.


            While a resident of Dothan, Mr. Jones served in the Alabama High School Athletic Association as a Class 3 basketball official for over thirty years and also as a football official and Junior College basketball official. A member of the Dothan Country Club, he volunteered twenty-three years  with the Future Masters Golf Tournament. Mr. Jones was a life member of the following: Dothan Elks Lodge-BPOE, Military Officers Association, National Guard Association, American Military Retirees Association and the Reserve Officers Association of the United States. He was a member of the Botanical Gardens, Landmark Park, Dothan Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Dothan Group. He was preceded in death by his father, Benjamin Franklin Jones, Sr., his mother, Mildred Iona Besson Jones, a son, Zackery Lynn Jones and his grandmother, Mary Wingate, who raised  him from the age of five.


            Surviving relatives include his wife, Peggy Fulford Jones, two sons, Butch Jones (Camie), Sprott, AL; and Tiger Jones (Carrie), Huntsville, AL; a sister, Dorothy Gulledge (Don), Eufaula; a brother, Walter Jones (Judy), Dothan; four grandchildren, Ben Jones (Kaitlyn), Colleen Jones, Zackery Jones and Savannah Jones, and his African gray parrot, “Rebel”.
