Mr. Billy Joe Horn, 89, a resident of Dothan, Alabama, passed away on Thursday, August 24, 2023 at home following an extended illness.

A private family graveside service was held at Winston Memorial Cemetery, Haleyville, Alabama on September 8, 2023.

Mr. Horn was born January 21, 1934 in Haleyville to Grady and Ruby Mae Johnson Horn. He was a 1952 graduate of Haleyville High School then completed 2 years at Florence State University (University of North Alabama). He served in the U.S. Army before returning to Haleyville to work as a Railroad engineer for 40 years with Illinois Central Railroad then Norfolk Southern Railroad. In 1983, he served as President of the Railroad Workers Union Local Chapter. In addition to his career with the railroad, he enjoyed several business ventures including Horn’s Clothing Store and as real estate broker with Horn’s Realty Co. Mr. Horn was a Mason and Shriner. He was recognized for his outstanding service in 1984 then honored as Shriner of the Year for the Freestate Shrine Club in 1985. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Haleyville.

Mr. Horn is preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen Knight Horn; parents, Grady and Ruby Johnson Horn; and sister, Amma Sue Horn Lovelady.

He is survived by a daughter, Lisa Horn Pierce (Wayne) of Dothan, AL; a son, Lee Horn (Paige) of Franklin, TN;  four grandchildren, Gantt Pierce (Niki) of Dothan, AL; Kaki Morrow (Nick) of Huntsville, AL; Jackson Horn (Sydney) of Huntsville, AL; Anna Kate Horn of Franklin, TN.; and six great grandchildren: Elle, Will and Max Pierce of Dothan; Avery, Calvin and Elaine Morrow of Huntsville.
