BERTHA COMMUNITY. . .Billy Ray Grantham, a resident of the Bertha Community of Dale County, died late Monday morning, June 20, 2022, in a Dothan hospital. He was 91.


Graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, June 22, 2022, in the New  Hope Baptist Church Cemetery with Reverend Bill Hart officiating. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 P.M. Wednesday in the church sanctuary.


In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Nancy Gast, 6349 County Road 67, North, Skipperville, AL 36374.


Mr. Grantham was a lifelong resident of the Bertha Community of Dale County, son of the late John P. Grantham and Mattie Snell Grantham.  He served his country in the U. S. Navy during the Korean War. Mr. Grantham was retired as the Mortuary Officer at Fort Rucker. He was an active member of the New Hope Baptist Church where he served as an active Deacon for fifty-one years and also retired as Deacon Emeritus. Mr. Grantham served New Hope Church in most church activities including the cemetery committee and also the Old Salem Cemetery. He was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Art de la Croix, four sisters, Jewel Barefield, Zenobia Oaks, Eloise Reid and his twin sister, Millie Faye Penton, five brothers, Woodrow Grantham, Dan Grantham, Mike Grantham, John P. Grantham and Cammie Joe Grantham.


Surviving relatives include his wife, Eunice Anderson Grantham, a daughter, Susan Grantham de la Croix, Headland; a son, Ray Grantham, Dothan; other family members include, Christopher de la Croix (Melissa), Colin de la Croix and Grayson de la Croix; numerous nieces and nephews.


Serving as active pallbearers will be Keith Covington, Sam Covington, Keith Grantham, Ricky Grantham, Jim Oaks and Scott Matthews. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be the Deacons of the New Hope Baptist Church.
