Bobby Joe Hughes of Dothan, formerly Geneva, passed on Saturday, July 9, 2022 at the age of 83 surrounded by family and friends.  A memorial service will be held 11:00 am Saturday, July 16, 2022 at First Presbyterian Church in Dothan, AL with Rev. Rusty Milton officiating.

The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service beginning at 10am.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests donation may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Dothan or Geneva Presbyterian Church, 209 S. Commerce St, Geneva, AL 36340.

Mr. Hughes was born in Geneva, AL on September 15, 1938, to the late Emmitt Thad and Annie Corine Barnes Hughes.  Being the eldest of nine, it was his job to keep everyone else in line or he would get in trouble himself. At least that is how he defended himself when Sarah Francis called him “mean”.

He attended Geneva High School, worked on the family farm, and later served in the US Army and Alabama National Guard. After a move to Dothan, he owned and operated Hughes Water Well Co in Dothan for over 40 years.

He was an active, hardworking member First Presbyterian Church of Dothan until his health prevented it.  He served on mission teams to Grenada, St Vincent, Kentucky, Mississippi, and others.

Bob loved to fish and fed multitudes throughout his life.  It would be a shame not to recognize his AMAZING hushpuppies as part of his legacy.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to Kindred Hospice.  While our experience with you was brief, you made an incredibly difficult time bearable with your love and clear concern for our husband, father, grandfather and friend.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Julia Kate Bush Hughes; two daughters, Angie Jane Grimes (Charles “Bird”) of Montgomery and Anne Marie Spears (David) of Dothan; his favorite side-kick and grandson Frederick Smith (Courtney) of Skipperville; great-grandchildren River Emmitt and Mallie Faye; brother, George Barnes (Doris) Hughes of Geneva; sisters, Gail (Phillip) Harvey of Panama City Beach, FL and Emily Ann (Steve) Brock of Marianna, FL.

He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers, L.E. “Pete” Hughes of Odessa TX, Charles Wyatt Hughes, Max Roger Hughes and Ben Hughes, all of Geneva, AL; sister, Thadine “Sadie” Roberts of Athens, AL.
