Charles Bernard Martin

Charles Bernard Martin was born in Bronx, New York on August 16, 1932. He was the youngest of two sons, born to second generation Irish American parents, all whom have preceded him in death. He served in the Army from January, 1953 to December, 1954. He was married for 22 years to Arline Carney Martin, who also preceded him in death.

Chuck was always proud to tell people that his first job, at age 14, was selling peanuts and soda pop in the stands at Yankee Stadium. After being discharged from the Army, worked in the meat packing industry, advancing to rapidly to middle management. Chuck played semi pro football in New York. He was tapped for tryouts with the Brooklyn Dodgers baseball team and the New York Giants football team, but a work-related head injury prohibited him from completing the football try out.

Prior to his retirement, Chuck served as corporate director of distribution and operations for grocery, general retail and apparel companies, including Wal Mart Corporation, L.A. Gear, and BUM Equipment. He left the last company to start his own apparel company, Ad Lib, (We Concept, Inc.) for which pledged to manufacture in the U.S. and give a percentage of profits to selected charities.

Chuck is survived by Molly, his wife of 34 years, a son, Charles Todd (Pam) Martin, both of Dothan, a step daughter, Krista Asteriadis Byers, of Thornton, CO, five granddaughters, Lauren Martin Davis, Brenyn Martin Osborn, Taylor Martin, Zoe and Audrey Byers and three great grandchildren, Kaden, Blake and Ava Davis.

Chuck will always be remembered as a very good man with a kind heart, and true Notre Dame fan, with talented managerial and leadership skills in the workplace, an exceptional athlete throughout his life, and a loving and devoted husband, father, stepfather, and grandfather.

If you would wish, in lieu of flowers, please send contributions in his name to Catholic Social Services, 557 W Main St, Dothan, AL 36301, in c/o Celeste Kelly, Director.
