Chief Petty Officer James W. Messer, of Slocomb, passed away Thursday, July 7, 2022, at the age of 87.

James was born in Henry County, Alabama on March 16, 1935, to the late James Messer and Louise Tice Messer. James was a 1954 graduate of Rehobeth High School and shortly after enlisted into the United States Navy, where he served for 20 years. In 1963, James married the love of his life, Linda and together they raised two beautiful children. After retiring from the United States Navy, James began his second career as the Director of Medical Services at Southeast Medical Center for 20 years.

James enjoyed spending timing with his family, watching football, basketball, and baseball, playing softball for the medical center before retirement, fishing, doing yard work, and cheering on the Alabama Crimson Tide.

A Memorial Service will be held at 10 AM, Monday, July 11, 2022, at Ward Wilson Funeral Home with Pastor Theresa Howard officiating.

In addition to his parents, James is preceded in death by his stepfather, James Windham; brothers, Jim Windham, W.C. Windham, Gene Windham, Thomas Windham, and Billy Messer.

Survivors include his loving wife of 59 years, Linda Messer; son, Brian Messer (Regina); daughter, Temple Karl (Daved); grandchildren, Jake Karl, Joey Karl, Bella Karl, Karsten Messer (Grace), and Claire Messer; brothers, James Windham (DeLoris), Lee Windham (Ana), and Johnny Windham (Jan).

The family would like to express their appreciation for the entire staff at Kindred Hospice and Southeast Health Cancer Center for their excellent care, love, and support.
