HEADLAND. . .Cooper Mims, a resident of Headland, died Thursday afternoon, August 25, 2022, in a Dothan hospital. He was 87.


A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, August 28, 2022, in the Headland United Methodist Church with Reverend Misty Barrett and Reverend Sam White officiating and a eulogy to be given by Sherrill Singleton, The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 P.M. Sunday in the Family Life Center of the church. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements.


In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Headland United Methodist Church, 103 West King Street, Headland, AL 36345 or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.


Cooper Mims was born in Donalsonville, Georgia and was reared in the Old Center Community of Henry County and Headland. He was a 1953 graduate of Rehobeth High School and had also attended Headland High School. Upon graduation from high school, Cooper enlisted in the United States Air Force and served his country during the Korean War era. After his discharge from the Air Force, he was transferred to the Alabama Air National Guard in the Dothan unit and later to the U. S. Army Reserve. Cooper retired from the Army Reserve in 1995 with rank of Sergeant First Class. He also retired from  ALFA Insurance in Headland as Agent after twenty years. Cooper was an active member of the Headland United Methodist Church where he was a member of the church choir and served on numerous church committees. He was a member of the Curry Woods Men’s Bible Class and also the Marathon Breakfast Club and the Domino Emporium in Headland. Cooper was preceded in death by his father, Lewis Bascom Mims, his mother, Lessie Chancey Mims Childree, his step-father, Barney Childree, two sisters, Lorraine Cole and Evelyn Loftin and a brother, Douglas Mims.


Surviving relatives include his wife, Ruby Ward Mims, a daughter, Starla Mims Bowling (Bruce), Childersburg, AL; a son, Keith Mims, Napier Field; a sister-in-law, Joyce Cook Mims, Dozier, AL; his grandchildren, Michelle Jenkins (Dean), Adam Bowling, Kaitlin Martin (Bobby), Michael Grant Jenkins, Aubrie Bowling, Charlotte Caine, Madison Bowling and Cooper Nash Martin; several nieces and nephews.
