Curry McDonald “Mac” Palmer

Mac Palmer, age 84 of Dothan, passed away early Sunday morning, November 15, 2020, at his residence, surrounded by his family and under the care of Kindred Hospice following an extended illness.

Graveside services will be held at 11am Wednesday, November 18, 2020, in the Midland City Cemetery with Reverend Tharel Shirah officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimers Resource Center, P.O. Box 1170, Dothan, AL 36302.

Mac was born May 26, 1936 in Midland City to the late Julice and Elizabeth Murphy Palmer. He graduated from Midland City High School and attended Mississippi Junior College on a football scholarship. He then attended and graduated from Troy State College, on a football and track scholarship. At Troy State, Mac set two records and lettered in football & track as well as earning his Bachelor of Science degree. Mac also played semi-pro football for the Dothan Colts. He taught and coached at Malvern Jr. High School, Slocomb High School, Midland City High School and Wetumpka High School and served as principal at Hohenbery Elementary School in Wetumpka. In 1966, Mac made a career change and went into sales and sales management until he retired in 2009 due to health reasons.

In addition to his parents, Mac was preceded in death by a sister, Carol Williams. Survivors include his wife of 36 years, Joy McGill Lucky Palmer of Dothan; two daughters and sons-in-law, Vicki and Tony Owens of Mesquite, TX and Susan and Paul Bryant of Brandon, MS; two sons and their wives, Keith (Kelly) Lucky and Chad (Kristi) Lucky; seven grandchildren, Mitch (Kaci) Lucky, Jenna (Brock) Oates, Tanner Lucky, Conor Lucky, Carson Lucky, Kelsie Lucky and Kaitlyn Theriot. Mac is also survived by four great-grandchildren, Makenzie Lucky, Mary Katherine Lucky, Matlee Lucky and Josh Oates, and other family.

The family would like to express their appreciation to Kindred Hospice, First United Methodist Church Respite, Barbara Harper, and other friends for their help and support, along with a very special thank you to Julie George .
