David Addis Kirkland, age 66 of Cottonwood, AL departed this life on March 15, 2021 due to complications from COVID-19.  Always one to have the last word, David tried to tell everyone this virus was deadly and not something to be fooled around with, but we think he took it a little far this time.  His family is thankful for the knowledge that as a believer and follower of Christ Jesus, this separation from him is only temporary, as they know he has merely stepped away from the shadowlands into Glory.

Funeral services for David will be held at 2pm Friday, March 19, 2021 in the Family First chapel. The family will receive friends beginning at noon at the chapel.

David was born January 27, 1955 to the late Marie and Addis Kirkland in Cottonwood, Alabama.  David met the loved of his life, Debbie, when he was 20 years old.  After a year of dating they married, and four years later had their first child, Kristy.  A short 15 months later, David Ashley made his appearance.  His wife and children would tell anyone that his greatest legacy was the strength and commitment to fighting for what is right that he instilled in them.  His children especially, are thankful for the life lessons of self-reliance, compassion, and gratitude he taught them.

David retired from CenturyLink after 38 years of service.  He enjoyed talking  phones and phone lines with anyone who was willing to talk shop with him.  He won a major award when the company was GTE for his special work on bringing express dial tone to this area.  He was a member of the local CWA and a strong proponent and friend of labor unions.

He spent his retirement remodeling his daughter’s home, landscaping his own yard using his well-worked tractor, and caring for the many felines that people continued to dump at his home.  He was at home among those he grew up with, and always loved to attend events that got him together with the rest of the Cottonwood High School Class of 1973.

In addition to his parents, David is preceded in death by his sister Madeline McDavid, and his brother, James Hopkins.  He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Deborah Bridges Kirkland, his two children, David Ashley Kirkland, and Kristy Maria Kirkland: his four brothers, Frederick Hopkins, Jonny Kirkland (Kim), William Nichols (Linda), Charles Nichols, several nieces and nephews and many feline friends.

David battled COVID-19 like it was his Goliath.  He held on for 53 days in the hospital, 50 days in ICU, and 43 days on a ventilator.  Many came to know and love “Team Tortoise” as he slowly and steadily plodded along, attempting to beat the pestilence that had infected his body.  His family thanks all who offered their love, care, support, and prayers during that time.  “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” 2 Timothy 4:7.
