Doris Mae Johnson Henderson


Doris Mae Johnson Henderson passed to her Eternal Home on Friday, March 2, 2012.  She was born June 11, 1930 in Americus, Georgia to Ely Cleveland and Alma McElhenney Johnson.


The family moved to Alabama in 1936 where Doris began school in Cowarts, but finished grade school in Gordon and high school in Ashford.  She married Rex Henderson in 1949 and they were parents to three sons and one daughter.


For over 30 years, she served alongside her husband, Rex Henderson, a Southern Baptist pastor in Houston, Henry, Barbour, and Coffee counties in Alabama and Seminole County, Georgia.  Most recently, she was a member of Antioch Baptist Church in Columbiana, Alabama and the Angel Fish Bible Study of Shelby Shores on Lay Lake.


Survivors include two sons, Roger (Nancy) Henderson, Chelsea, Alabama, Danny (Robin) Henderson, Headland, Alabama, daughter, Cindy (Jimmy) Ward, Shelby, Alabama, sister, Rebecca (Lamar) Lamp, Columbia, Alabama, five grandchildren, Amanda (Kenny) Blakeman, Manhattan Beach, California, Holly Henderson, Panama City, Florida, Hope (Brandon) Shirah, Webb, Alabama, Andrew Henderson, Headland, Alabama, and Haley Ward, Dothan, Alabama, five great grandsons, two great granddaughters.


She was preceded in death by husband Rex Edmon Henderson and son Leonard Philip Henderson, parents Ely Cleveland Johnson and Alma Beatrice McElhenney, sisters C. Wyvonne Johnson and E. Voncille Petty.


Funeral services will be held 3:00 p.m. Monday, March 5, 2012, at Byrd Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Phillip Rush and Rev. Heather Peacock officiating. Interment will follow in Dothan City Cemetery with Byrd Funeral Home on West Main directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:00 until 2:45 p.m. prior to services on Monday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Antioch Baptist Church, 2870 Highway 61, Columbiana, Alabama 35051 or to a favorite charity.
