NEWVILLE…Dr. Marjorie Crews Kirkland, a resident of Newville, died late Wednesday night, January 6, 2021, in Arbor Springs Health & Rehab in Opelika. She was 92.


   Graveside services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, January 9, 2021, in the Newville Baptist Church Cemetery with Reverend Hugh D. Kirkland, Jr. officiating. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends following the service. Social distancing and mask guidelines will be observed.


   In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Newville Baptist Church, P.O. Box 13, Newville, AL 36353 or to the Alzheimer’s Resource Center, P.O. Box 1170, Dothan, AL 36302.


   Dr. Kirkland was a native of the Echo Community in Dale County and was reared in Headland where she was a graduate of the Headland High School in 1946. She obtained a B.S. Degree from the University of Alabama and a Master’s Degree and a Doctorate Degree in Education from Auburn University. In earlier years, Dr. Kirkland taught school at Headland High School and Young Junior High School in Dothan. She taught at Troy State University, Dothan & Ft. Rucker campus, retiring with a rank of Full Professor. Dr. Kirkland served as Dean of Counseling and Psychology and also Dean of Education and Psychology at TSU, Dothan & Ft. Rucker. She was the first Outpatient Director of the Wiregrass Mental Health Center. Dr. Kirkland was also a Counselor at Auburn University’s Human Development Center and a Psychologist at the Veterans Hospital in Tuskegee. She was a member of Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society and was the 1976-1977 Alabama Woman of Achievement. After her retirement, she was involved with a daylily nursery, Kirkland Daylilies, at her home in Newville. She was a resident of The Harbor at Opelika since 2018. Dr. Kirkland was a member of the Newville Baptist church. She was preceded in death by husband, Joe Ed Kirkland, her parents, Lunie Thomas Crews and Sallie Jo Johnson Crews, a sister, Sallie Crews Sawdy, and a brother, L. T. Crews, Jr.


   Surviving relatives include her daughter, Deborah Gale Lawson, Memphis, TN; her son, Joe Ed “Eddie” Kirkland, Jr. (Elizabeth), Auburn; two sisters, Joann C. Shelley, Headland; and Donna C. Brackin, Dothan; a brother, Wayne Crews (Louise), Albertville; four grandchildren, Kirk Lawson, Kelli Walker (Krystal), Amanda Kirkland LeCompte (Jerod) and Nathan Kirkland; six great-grandchildren, Sarana Rosa (Will), Evan Lawson, Jack Kinney, Johnny Walker, Jack LeCompte and Max LeCompte.
