Dr. William Lies, III, 96, a resident of Dothan passed away Thursday, February 17, 2022 at his home.

Graveside services will be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alabama West Florida United Methodist Foundation,
Dr. and Mrs. William Lies, III scholarship fund at P.O. Box 8066, Dothan, AL 36304.

Dr. Lies was born February 4, 1926 in Brooklyn, New York. At the age of 10, his family moved to his
grandmother’s farm near Coleman, Georgia. At 16 he entered Duke University and graduated from
Duke Medical School at 22. Dr. Lies completed his internship and residencies at Duke and Long Island
College Hospitals. After serving in the US Army Medical Corps, he returned to Duke Hospital to
complete a pediatric residency.

Dr. Lies opened his pediatric practice at 110. S. Lena Street, Dothan, in May 1953. With the expansion of
the number of patients and the addition of dedicated partners, the practice grew to become Dothan
Pediatric Clinic in 1968. In 2004, the clinic’s founder retired after more than 50 years of service to
Dothan and surrounding communities – it is estimated that Dr. Lies cared for more than 40,000
Wiregrass children.

Dr. Lies had many hobbies and talents. He grew orchids in his greenhouse and planted annual
summertime gardens. He built furniture, made brass chess sets and small metal sculptures of rural
objects and boats. He enjoyed spending time at his cabin, hunting, fishing and driving his cart on the
trails on the family timberlands in Georgia. He was an avid bridge player and a lifelong fan of Duke
Basketball.

Dr. Lies was a member of First United Methodist Church of Dothan.

Dr. Lies was predeceased by his wives: Virginia Winters Lies (1968), Patricia Michel Lies (2001) and Sally
Farmer Lies (2010). Also preceding him in death were his parents, Susan Gladys Beauchamp Lies and
William Lies, Jr. and his daughter, Karen Lies McCarroll.

He is survived by five children: William Lies, IV (Jane) of Pensacola, FL, Dr. Steve Lies (Kathy) of
Goldsboro, NC, Susan Lies Ethridge and Elanor Michel (Stan Scott) of Dothan and Michael Michel of
Birmingham; his son-in-law: Steve McCarroll of Dothan; five grandchildren: Ginny Bakken (Jim) and
Susan Garrett (Taylor) of Birmingham, Windy Lampson (Jeff) of Burlington, NC, Hillary Messer (Tim) of
Port St. Lucie, FL, and Max Michel of Birmingham; and six great-grandchildren: Jack and Kate Bakken and
Mac Garrett of Birmingham, Noah and Miles Lampson of Burlington, NC and Hayley Messer of Port St.
Lucie, FL.

Dr. Lies’ family extends a special thank you to the multiple generations of Dothan and Wiregrass area
residents who chose Dr. Lies, his early partners, and the current pediatricians, nurses and staff of the
Dothan Pediatric Healthcare Network of clinics to care for their children.

Dr. Lies’ family also wishes to express their gratitude to Helen Kelly, and his dedicated caregivers for the
last few years – Ricky Lee, Evie Riley and Philip Beasley.
