Elizabeth (Betty) Anne Doran-Wittekind of Enterprise, Alabama passed away on Saturday May 30, 2020.  She was 83.


A memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m., Friday, June 19, 2020 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church with Father Zachary Greenwell officiating.  Burial will follow in Meadowlawn Memorial Park with Sorrells Funeral Home directing.  The family will receive friends at the church beginning at 10:00 a.m. and continuing until service time.


Elizabeth (Betty) was born July 15, 1936 to the late Raymond A. Doran and Helen H. Doran in Cincinnati, Ohio.  She married her husband, Wilfred H. Wittekind on August 31, 1957.  She was preceded in death by her brother, Raymond R. Doran and son, Mark Alan Wittekind.


Betty pursued her formal education at the University of Cincinnati (Undergraduate Teaching Degree); Troy University (Masters Degree in Counseling).  She applied her formal counseling training to her Catholic Charities job of integrating the Southeast Asia refuges into the Wiregrass area during the 1970-1980 periods.  During this same period, she would answer calls from the Fort Rucker School System to fill in as a substitute school teacher.  Betty was hired as a Training Specialist in the Fort Rucker Civil Service System as the developer for the CH-47 Flight Engineer course and the Spanish Training Battalion program until her retirement in 1999 at the grade of GS-12.  She was awarded The Honorable Order of St. Michael by the President of the Army Aviation Association of America, Inc., with the concurrence of the Chief of Army Aviation at her retirement ceremony.


Betty also found time to be involved in the initial organization of the Wiregrass Emergency Pregnancy Service and continued to counsel clients throughout the years 1975-2005.  She was nominated and served as the President of the Fort Rucker Officers Wives Club for one term.  She was active in the St. John Catholic Church as a Eucharistic Minister, Lecturer, CCD Teacher and as a DeColores Team Leader.  She also initiated the first Returning Home Catholic class and the first May Crowning ceremony at St. John Catholic Church.


She is survived by her husband of 63 years; three children, David L. Wittekind (Beverly) of Miramar Beach, Florida, Thomas M. Wittekind (Tracy) of Portland, Oregon, and Gary W. Wittekind of Auburn, Alabama; one sister, Nancy Jean Piszczek of Lawrenceville, Georgia; one grandson, Travis J. and one granddaughter, Catherine H.
