Elizabeth Anne Stewart Byal passed away peacefully at Baptist Hospital South in Montgomery, AL on May 16, 2020 at the age of 89.
Elizabeth was born on November 10, 1930 in Newbern, TN to her parents Finis Garrett Stewart and Nezzie B. Yates Stewart. As a young woman, Liz worked as a journalist for the Chicago Tribune. She later won the title of Miss Gary Indiana which led to a career in modeling. After relocating to Montgomery, AL she worked many years as a manager for Hodgson Concrete and also as a manager of Arrowhead County Club. After retiring, Liz lived in Enterprise, AL for 15 years.
Liz was one of the first charter members of the Montgomery Chapter of NAWIC (National Association of Women in Construction) and served as one of the first Chapter Presidents mentoring many women in this role. She served as a Cub Scout Pack leader for her son and neighborhood boys. Always having a love for animals, she was a champion for the lost or unwanted pets and throughout her life opened her heart and home to them.
Elizabeth is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Tamara Byal of Dadeville, AL; her sister Peggy Marie McKeny; two grandchildren, Joshua Byal and Kristin Byal Beene; and 4 great grandchildren - Grayson James Byal; Britley Elizabeth Beene; Ryleigh Anne Stewart Beene, and Hadley Marler Byal. Liz was greatly loved and will be missed by all.
According to her wishes, Liz was cremated and in lieu of a church service, the family is planning a memorial and celebration of life for a future date and time.
