Ellie Ward, a resident of Rehobeth, passed away Sunday, August 15, 2021 at Southeast Health. She was 70.


Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Thursday, August 19, 2021, at Rehobeth Baptist Church with Dr. Jerry Grandstaff, Rev. Chad Hixon and Rev. Owen McAlister officiating and Glover Funeral Home directing. Burial will be held 10:00 a.m.  Saturday, August 21, 2021 at Mountain Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Anderson, South Carolina with Rev. Owen McAlister officiating.


The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. At all other times the family will be at the home of her daughter, Mary Elizabeth Benton, 200 Blumberg Drive, Dothan. Flowers are being accepted.


Ellie was born October 14, 1950 in Anderson, South Carolina to Andrew Owen and Elizabeth Hillhouse McAlister and lived the early years of her life in Anderson. They later moved to Mt. Dora Florida where she grew up. After graduating from Mt. Dora High School in 1968, Ellie completed cosmetology school at Woody’s Hair Styling School in Orlando, Florida. She then owned and operated Ellie’s Hair Fashion for over twenty years and was a practicing cosmetologist for over fifty years. She was a member of Mt. Dora First Baptist Church.


In 1991, she moved to Rehobeth to follow her husband in the gospel ministry. She attended Rehobeth Baptist Church where she was a VBS instructor for the association. She also traveled to South Carolina teaching VBS for churches. Beginning as a teenager, she always taught children’s Sunday School. Ellie had a true love for people and found joy serving others. She loved her family, especially her grandchildren that she spent many hours with. She will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by all who knew her.


Ellie is predeceased by her parents, her son, Jason Allen Ward, an infant brother, two nieces and a nephew.


Survivors include her husband, Jesse A. “Jay” Ward of Dothan; a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Benton (Stan); a son, Ryan Owen Ward (Sharon) of Ashford; a brother, Owen McAlister of New Holland, SC; a sister-in-law, Deloris McAlister of Williamston, SC; grandchildren, Delaney Elizabeth Benton, Ansley Ward, Brentley Ward and Chesley Ward; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.


Active pallbearers will be Wayne Turner, Michael Hand, Stan Benton, Mike Azar, Wayne Martin and Tim Martin.
