MIDLAND CITY….Essie Mae Ackerman Justice, a resident of the Sylvan Grove community, near Midland City, died early Wednesday morning, November 23, 2011, at her home. She was 88.


           


Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M. Friday, November 25, 2011, in the Sylvan Grove United Methodist Church with Dr. Jerry M. Dooling officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Holman-Headland Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 3:00 P.M. Friday in the church sanctuary.  


           


Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to Gentiva Hospice, P.O. Drawer 2127, Dothan, AL 36302 or to the Sylvan Grove United Methodist Church, c/o Wyndle Enfinger, 3991 County Road 73, Midland City, AL 36353.


           


Mrs. Justice was born and reared in Chipley, Florida, daughter of the late Daniel Strickland and Minnie Sims Strickland. She lived in Eufaula, Alabama many years before moving to the Sylvan Grove community in 1962. Mrs. Justice was retired as a supervisor from the Circle Cafeteria in Dothan. In earlier years, she and her late husband owned and operated Ackerman’s Quick Service Stop in Eufaula. Mrs. Justice was a member of the Sylvan Grove United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husbands, George B. Ackerman and Ralph Justice, a son, Wendell Wayne Ackerman, a sister, Cora Lee Monk and also three brothers, Talmadge Strickland, Matthew Strickland and Raymond Strickland.


           


Surviving relatives include two daughters, Geraldine Henderson and husband, Don; and Shirley Woodham and husband, Danny R. (Ricky), all of Midland City; two sisters, Vera Hampton, Winter Haven, FL; and Zena Corbin, Midland City; a brother, Malcolm Strickland, DeFuniak Springs, FL; six grandchildren, Lisa O’Neal and husband, K.O.; Keith Henderson, Derek R. Woodham and wife, Tanya; Dana McDaniel and husband, Joe; Elsa Plant and husband, Michael; and Wendell (Bo) Reynolds; thirteen great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.


           


Serving as active pallbearers will be Keith Henderson, K.O. O’Neal, Jerod O’Neal, Justin Pettis, Derek Woodham, Joe McDaniel and Bailey McDaniel. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be granddaughters and great-granddaughters.

Miss Essie was a wonderful, vibrant woman. I had the pleasure of sitting with her and listened to her stories about her days at circle cafe and all of the officers she would wait on. She loved her children and her life. She is a very special lady and she will be missed greatly.
