Freddie Aaron Sutton, age 79, of Ariton, passed from this life on Thursday, February 18, 2021, after a courageous battle with cancer at his residence surrounded by family.

Graveside services will be held at 3:00 PM on Tuesday, February 23, 2021, at the Ariton Cemetery adjacent to the Bethel Assembly of God Church in Ariton with Pastor Wayne Williams officiating. Fuqua Bankston Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Freddie was born on March 18, 1941, to the late Vester and Margaret Sutton of Ariton. Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, was his eldest son, Walter Aaron Sutton.

A lifelong resident of Ariton, Freddie devoted his life to farming, most notably for his knowledge and love of the fish industry. He was a follower of Christ and a devoted member of Holmes Baptist Church in Ariton. Later in life, he discovered a passion for public safety and devoted the last 10+ years to firefighting and emergency medical services. He served as a primary responder for the Clio and Ariton Rescue Squads as a licensed emergency medical technician and was Fire Chief for the Elamville Volunteer Fire Department in Barbour County. Aside from his selfless devotion to community service, his ultimate achievement was to be the oldest actively practicing EMT in the country, more specifically in Alabama. In his final days, Governor Kay Ivey issued a Certificate of Commendation to honor his achievement and dedicated service to countless people throughout the state.

Survivors include his wife of sixty-years, Lurlean Sutton; brother Gerald (Myrtle) Sutton Sr.; daughter Terri (Kent) Phillips, son Neil (Julie) Sutton; seven grandchildren – Angela Sutton, James Phillips, Sarah (Sam) Phillips, Brandi (Harvey) Wren, Nicholas (Tyler) Sutton, Jennifer Simpson and Amanda (T.J.) Sewell; eight great-grandchildren – Presley, Gabe, Kailee, T.J., Holden, Daniel, Cooper and Lyla; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Serving as active pallbearers will be James Phillips, Nicholas Sutton, Harvey Wren, Eric Sutton, Gerald Sutton Jr. and William Carroll. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Ariton, Clio and Elamville Fire-Rescue Squads.

Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made in his honor to the charity of your choice. A special thank you to the staff of Community Hospice of Ozark and Jones Medical Supply for the outstanding, compassionate service during our time of need.
