ABBEVILLE…Harold Douglas “Doug” Preston, Command Sergeant Major, U.S. Army, Retired, a resident of Abbeville, passed away early Monday morning, August 9, 2021, surrounded by his loving family at his home. He was 78.


   Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Thursday, August 12, 2021, in the Newville Baptist Church with Reverend Norman C. Simmons officiating and a eulogy to be given by his son, Brian Preston. Graveside services with Military Honors will follow in the church cemetery. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 6:30 P.M. Wednesday, August 11, 2021, in the mortuary chapel in Headland.


   In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, KS 66675.


   Doug Preston was born and reared in Dale County, near Echo, Alabama, son of the late Irving Rex Preston and Marjorie Chancey Preston. He was a 1961 graduate of Newville High School. Doug served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War Era and lived in various locations in the United States, Korea and Germany. He was involved in several battles while serving on Border Patrol in Czechoslovakia. After retiring from the military in 1986 after 25 and a half years of service, Doug continued to serve his country as Emergency Operations Officer with Civil Service at Fort Rucker. He was a member of the Masonic Order and the Henry County Historical Group. Doug was very passionate about his genealogical research and helping to mark the graves at Old Center United Methodist and Newville Baptist Cemeteries. He attended Newville Baptist Church. Doug was preceded in death by his brother, James Durwood Preston, and his brother-in-law, Bruce Hancock.


   Surviving relatives include his wife, Sheila McClendon Preston; four daughters, Kimberly Preston (Valerie Simmons), Marianna, FL; Jennifer Warden (Jimmy), Dothan; Malinda Langlois (Mike), Headland; and Ashley Caldwell (Taylor), Headland; his son, Brian Preston (Tammy), Dothan; three sisters, Brenda Hancock, Midland City; Sandra Bell (Ray), Echo; and Lisa Preston, Midland City; a brother, Rev. Kenneth Preston (Cindy), Edwin Community; nine grandchildren, Brooke Gay, Bradley Gay, Makinley Warden, Preslie Ash, Lawson Langlois, Sanders Caldwell, Hutton Caldwell, Matthew Preskitt (Caitlin) and Madison Preston; four great-grandchildren, Turner, Charlie, Cal and Evans; numerous nieces and nephews.


   Serving as active pallbearers will be Matthew Preskitt, Bradley Gay, Lee Hancock, Ken Preston, Brody Tyler and Brandon Arnold. Serving as honorary pallbearer will be Dave Preston.
