Haywood Allen Helms, a resident of Louisville, Alabama passed away Wednesday, January 10, 2024, at his residence surrounded by his loving family. He was 84 years old.


Funeral services with military honors will be held Monday, January 15, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at Louisville Baptist Church in Louisville, Alabama with Dr. John Michael Helms officiating and Glover Funeral Home of Clayton directing. The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. prior to the service.


In lieu of the flowers the family requests contributions be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital- 262 Danny Thomas Place Memphis, TN 38105.


Haywood was born April 25, 1939, in Barbour County to the late Quinton Winford and Fannie Evans Helms. After graduating Barbour County High School in 1957, he joined the United States Air Force and proudly served his country for almost 21 years. He also was a teacher at Dixie Academy in Louisville. In his spare time, he enjoyed gardening, working on the farm, and playing dominoes, but most of all he loved and enjoyed spending time with his family.


He is preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, James Helms (Thelma), John W. Helms (Eileen), and Quinton Helms, Jr. (Mervyn); two sisters, Annie Catherine Segers (William Jr.) and Mildred Johnson (Merwin); five brothers-in-law, Earl Baker, Louie Hurst, Spurgeon Baker (Barbara Sue), Dean Baker, and Bobby Baker (Mary);  three sisters-in-law, Ruby Kate Faircloth (Andrew), Louise Helms, and Ruth Helms. 


Left to cherish his memories are his loving wife of 64 years, Minnie Lou Baker Helms; two daughters, Tina Louise Helms (Dr. John Michael) of Nicholson, Georgia and Lisa Kaye Burnham (Ricky) of Clio, Alabama; brother, Durwood Helms (Betty) of Lititz, Pennsylvania; sister, Mary Ann Tew (David) of McDonough, Georgia; four sisters-in-law, Luellen Baker of Daleville, Alabama, Delma Hurst of Phenix City, Alabama, Janis Baker of Daleville, Alabama, and Vivian Lambert (Jesse) of Daleville, Alabama;  four grandchildren, John Quinton Helms (Yami Avila), Erica Lynn Holmes (Ryan), Ryan Fletcher Helms (Alyssa), and Dylan Kyle Burnham (Claire); eight great-grandchildren, Hunter Holmes, Shelby Jo Holmes, Rylan Lassiter, Creede Lassiter, Kase Holmes, Mia Claire Helms, Carolina Grace Helms, and Blakely Katherine Burnham; several nieces and nephews.


Asked to serve as pallbearers are Myron Johnson, Douglas Faircloth, David Lambert, Kyle Helms, Jeff Baker, and Keith Lambert.


The family wishes to express their sincere love and gratitude to the Gentiva Hospice family that so kindly showed their love and help over the past year. You were their encourager and strength.
