Helen L. Skanes


Helen L. Skanes, a resident of Tallahassee, FL and formerly of Dothan, passed away Saturday, February 16, 2013 in Tallahassee at the age of 84.


Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 21, 2013 at Byrd Funeral Home Chapel on West Main Street with Rev. Ray Jones and Rev. Orrin Barrett  officiating. Burial will follow at Gardens of Memory Cemetery with Byrd Funeral Home on West Main Street directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to service time on Thursday.


 Mrs. Skanes was born March 17, 1928 in Meldrim, Georgia and lived the early years of her life there. After her marriage to Minnes Skanes, she traveled with him and made her home wherever his military career took them. She was a stay-at-home mom who raised four children and took charge of running the household successfully. Mrs. Skanes was a devout Christian who loved her church and gospel music.  She enjoyed traveling abroad, especially to Israel and on other trips with her church family. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother and will be dearly missed.


 She is predeceased by her husband, Minnes Skanes who died in 2011.


Survivors include four children, Anita Jane Timothy of Midland City, Marsha Jean Tew of Dallas, Georgia, Thomas Milton Skanes of Dothan, Sandra Joan Berger of Tallahassee, FL; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; three brothers, Earl Slater, Homer Slater and Richard Slater.
