Henry "Hank" Niewold, passed away on December 13, 2023, at the age of 87, after an extended illness. Born on December 12, 1936, in Chicago, Illinois, Hank's journey led him to a life of service, love, and an unwavering dedication to his family and friends. He departed this world in Dothan, Alabama, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and bravery.


Hank's early years were spent in the bustling city of Chicago, where he attended Timothy Christian High School. His strong sense of duty emerged early on, leading him to serve his country in the Army for ten years. Following his military service, he continued a life of public service as a police officer in Downers Grove, Illinois, for 25 years. Hank's commitment to his community was unwavering, and his courage as an officer was matched only by his friendly demeanor.


In 1987, Hank and his family moved to Dothan, where he quickly became a valued member of the community. He worked at Ft. Rucker in maintenance before taking a position at Sunset Memorial Park, where he would remain until his retirement at the age of 70. His work ethic and selfless nature were evident to all who knew him.


Hank's devotion to his faith was as steadfast as his commitment to his community. For 25 years, he was a dedicated member of the Triumphant Cross Lutheran Church in Dothan, where he forged lasting friendships and found spiritual solace.


Hank's life was enriched by his love for cars and motorcycles, passions that he pursued with the same vigor as his professional endeavors. He was a simple man who found joy in the comforts of home and the companionship of his dogs. His dear friends will remember him for his friendly banter and the selfless support he extended to all.


Hank's memory will be lovingly cherished by his wife of 43 years, Donna Niewold, his three children, and his long-time friend and "son he always wanted," Tim Armstrong. His presence will also be missed by the many friends he made throughout his life, who saw in him the epitome of courage and kindness. Hank was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Halliet Niewold; and his loyal dogs, Lucy and Zeus, who were constant companions throughout his life.


Hank Niewold's life story is one of dedication and service, marked by the love he shared with his family and the impact he made on his community. His was a life well-lived, and he will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Hank's legacy will continue to inspire those he leaves behind, as they reflect on a life characterized by friendship, selflessness, and courage.
