HENRY HOLT STOKES
ABBEVILLE….Henry Holt Stokes, a resident of County Road 53, Abbeville, died Wednesday evening, April 18, 2012 at his home. He was 85.
Funeral services will be 3:00 P.M. Sunday, April 22, 2012 in the Union Free Will Baptist Church with Reverend Ray S. Reiley and Brother Harold Pettis officiating. Burial will follow with military and Masonic rites in the church cemetery. Holman-Abbeville Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 4:00 until 6:00 P.M. Saturday at the mortuary.
Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the Union Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Will Maddox, 2651 County Road 53, Abbeville, AL 36310 or to Covenant Hospice, 104 Rock Bridge Road, Dothan, AL 36303.
Mr. Stokes was a native and lifelong resident of the Union Community of Henry County, son of the late James Long Stokes and Linnie Jane Herring Stokes. He formerly served as the District 2 Henry County Commissioner for twenty years and was appointed in 1971 by Governor George C. Wallace as an honorary Lt. Colonel Aide-de-Camp in the Alabama State Militia. Through his many years of farming he received numerous awards and was co-owner of M & S Cattle Company of Abbeville. Mr. Stokes was a charter supporter of the Paralyzed Veterans of America and faithfully supported the American Cancer Society and Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. He was a member of Brown’s Crossroads Masonic Lodge #529, the V.F.W. Post 6224 and the Bradley-Keller American Legion Post in Abbeville. Mr. Stokes was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Chester where he was in Tokyo Bay at the signing of the Japanese surrender. He was a member of the Union Free Will Baptist Church where he was a Trustee, long time song director and chairman of the cemetery committee.
Mr. Stokes was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy Harpe Stokes, two brothers, Lawrence Stokes, Arrie Long (Zeke) Stokes and a sister, Vivian Stokes Hopkins.
Surviving relatives include four sons, Dr. Steve H. Stokes and wife, Angelia, Dothan; Bill Norton and wife, Vicki, Columbia; Gradford H. Stokes (partner, Bobby Jr., and canine companions, “Pookie and Phoenix”) West Palm Beach, FL and James H. Stokes and fiancé, Sue, Scottsville, VA; two sisters-in-law, Betty Harpe Lovett, Abbeville and Juliette Baxley Stokes, Edwin community; five grandchildren, Simon Stokes and wife, Katie, Jonathan Stokes and wife, Taylor Lee, Steven Stokes, Jimmy Norton and Malinda Jane Stokes; one great-granddaughter, Taylor Norton; nieces and nephews, Jane Steele, Michael Lovett, Edward Lovett, Sue Tillis, Mark Hopkins, Leslie Hopkins, Angie Barber, Amy Stokes and Long Stokes; longtime friend and business partner, Henry County Sheriff Will Maddox.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Michael Lovett, Edward Lovett, Will Maddox, Allen Tillis, Jimmy Norton and Matt Culpepper.
The family would like to express their appreciation for the loving care shown to Mr. Holt during his illness to Aunt Betty Lovett, Sheriff Will Maddox, Mae Ella Reynolds (private care giver), Renae Hester (private LPN), Henry County Health & Rehabilitation Facility, Southeast Alabama Medical Center and to Covenant Hospice.
