Hershel Denny Benefield of Jack, AL passed away at his home on June 12, 2019.  He was 83.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 15, 2019, at Sorrells Funeral Home in Enterprise with the family providing the eulogy.  Burial will follow in Meadowlawn Cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home directing.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday beginning at 9:00 a. m. and continuing until time of service.

Hershel was born July 13, 1935 to the late Hubert and Velma Benefield.  He is preceded in death by wife, Naomi Benefield.

Raised in Alabama, he spent his earlier days in Tampa, Florida where he began his career alongside his father, Hubert. As masonry contractors, they built residential and commercial structures as well. A few projects of note in the Bay area were the Jaili sports complex in St. Petersburg and Safety Village of Lowery Park-Tampa.

He was also a large part of the development of Carollwood in the 60’s and 70s, but perhaps one of the most beautiful was the attractive stone work on the front of The University Church of God alongside (then) Interstate 75 just south of Fowler Avenue.

Since a youth, he was a member of the Buffalo Avenue and later Temple Terrace/Riverhills Churches of God. While in Tampa, he held positions within his local church as well as the state offices of the Churches of God.

After moving to Alabama in 1978, his career endeavors varied from home security, farm and auto auctions, stock car raceway promoter and parking security for Troy University.

Even until his recent physical limitations, Hershel as recently as this spring was maintaining his nearly 5 acre lawn, always enjoying his time on a mower or tractor.

He had a love of southern gospel muic, fishing and hunting, but perhaps most enjoyed encouraging his family in their endeavors and bragging on them incessantly.

He is survived by daughter, Renae Benefield of Montgomery, AL; son, Roby Benefield (Alma) of Dothan, AL; daughter, Lori Bradley (Terry) of Enterprise, AL; sister, Velma Juliette Williams of New Hope, AL and grandchildren:  Jenifer, Jeffrey and Seth Benefield; Jason, Justin and Jordan Bradley; Rey and Ava Chavez.
