Howard Dean Roper

Howard Dean Roper, known fondly as Howard by his friends and family, passed away peacefully on February 16, 2024, in Dothan, Alabama. Born on August 13, 1939, in Portales, New Mexico, to Prince and June Roper, Howard's life journey was characterized by adventure, creativity, and deep love for his family.

Howard proudly served his country as a member of the Marine Corps for six years, a period of service that instilled in him a sense of discipline and camaraderie that he carried throughout his life. His adventurous spirit began at an early age with his parents which led him to various corners of the Southwest US, where he developed a love for the great outdoors. An avid fisherman and hunter, Howard found solace and joy in the embrace of nature. His favorite pastime was fly fishing, a skill at which he excelled, often carving his own fly-fishing lures with meticulous detail.

The couple’s family, included his sons Thomas R. Roper (Katrina), Dean Roper (Lisa), and stepson Clay Reale (Naomi). Howard's legacy continued to grow with his cherished grandchildren Atheena, Benjamin, Samantha, Trevor, Heather, Gage, and Baker, and he was blessed to see the joy of many great-grandchildren. He leaves behind many nieces, nephews, family members, and friends. He was preceded in death by several of his brothers and sisters.

Howard's life was a testament to the values of family, heritage, and the great outdoors. He was a man who lived with purpose and passion, inspiring those who knew him to embrace life's adventures with open arms. His infectious love for life, his handy skills, and his loving nature will be deeply missed by his nieces, nephews, and friends who had the privilege of knowing him.

As we say farewell to Howard Dean Roper, we celebrate a life well-lived, a journey well-traveled, and a legacy that will continue to flourish in the hearts of those he loved. He has left an indelible mark on this world, and his spirit will continue to guide us, like a beacon of love and strength, for generations to come.
