HOWARD  JOE  GRANTHAM

ASHFORD, AL…..Howard Joe Grantham, a resident of Ashford, died Monday night, December 12, 2011, of injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident which occurred in Thomaston, Georgia. He was 86.

           

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, December 15, 2011, in the New Hope Baptist Church, Bertha community of Dale County, with Reverend W. M. Todd and Reverend Shane Traylor officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Holman-Headland Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 P.M. Thursday in the church sanctuary.

           

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the New Hope Baptist Church or to the New Hope Baptist Cemetery Fund, c/o Billy Grantham, 826 County Road 7, Skipperville, AL 36374.

           

Mr. Grantham was born and reared in the Bertha community of Dale County, son of the late William Jeremiah Grantham and Pearl Enfinger Grantham. He served his country in the United States Army during World War II. Mr. Grantham moved to Ashford in 1966. He retired as a Local Operations Lineman with Alabama Power Company in the Ashford office. Mr. Grantham was a member of the Cowarts Baptist Church and formerly served as a Deacon at Wayside Baptist Church in Ashford. He was an avid fisherman. Mr. Grantham was preceded in death by a brother, Jack Grantham and a grandson, John Michel Grantham.

           

Surviving relatives include his wife, Susie Ella Johns Grantham, Ashford, AL; two sons, Joe Grantham and wife, Kathi, Covington, GA; and Jerry Grantham and wife, Becky, Headland; five sisters, Betty Nabors, Montgomery, AL; Sue Quick, Madison, FL; Peggy Doren and husband, John, Bertha community; Patsy Walker and husband, Estus, Ozark, AL; Sarie Ready and husband, Jerry, Bertha community; three grandchildren, Michael Grantham, Kelli Owens and husband ,Chad; and Jeff Grantham and wife, Ginnie; four great-grandchildren, Jake Grantham, Katelyn Owens, Grant Owens and Griffin Owens.

           

Serving as active pallbearers will be Wayne Grantham, Garry Grantham, Andy Johns, Michael Grantham, Jeff Grantham and Tim Walker.
