Hugh Allen Sallas


 


Hugh Allen Sallas, of Dothan, entered into eternal salvation, Sunday, March 25, 2012 at his residence after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 71.


 


Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 28, 2012 at Byrd Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Steve Trail officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Hill Cemetery with Byrd Funeral Home on West Main Street directing. The family visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday.


 


Flowers are being accepted or memorials may be made to First Freewill Baptist Church “Building Fund” or Southern Care Hospice.


 


Mr. Sallas was born June 19, 1940 in Houston County and attended Rehobeth High School. He excelled on the football field where he earned the nickname “Bull” for his strength and perseverance on the field. He served in the U.S. Air Force as a young adult.


 


He later went to work with the Government Test Board at Ft. Rucker for approximately 20 years followed by a 20 year career with the Chattahoochee Industrial Railroad as an engineer and conductor. He retired in July of 1997 and devoted his time to his love of the outdoors and his beloved grandchildren, Ashton and Tanner.


 


On July 21, 1962 Hugh married the love of his life, Lois W. Sallas. They were blessed with two children and two grandchildren. He spent his life loving and taking care of his family which was his legacy! He was a shining example of what a husband, father and grandfather should be.


 


Mr. Sallas enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, decorating for Christmas and anything outdoors, but most of all, spending time with his family. He was a member of First Freewill Baptist Church and a 32nd degree Mason, Scottish Rite.


 


Mr. Sallas is preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Alma Sallas; brothers and sisters, Jack Sallas, Robert Sallas, Charles Ralph Sallas, Betty Dunn, Jerry Joe Sallas and Carol Sallas.


 


He is survived by his wife, Lois Wood Sallas of Dothan; a son and daughter-in-law, Dennis Hugh and Susan Sallas of Dothan; a daughter, Cynthia Carol Sallas of Kennesaw, GA; grandchildren, Ashton Elizabeth Sallas and Tanner Houston Sallas; a sister, Jean King of Ashford; two brothers, Arthur Sallas of Ashford and Harry Sallas of Lake Seminole, GA.
