FT. GAINES, GEORGIA. . .J. Edward Cox, III, a resident of Ft. Gaines, Georgia and Abbeville, Alabama, died Monday afternoon, December 10, 2012, in a Dothan hospital. He was 63.


            Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. (C.S.T.) Thursday, December 13, 2012, in the Holman-Abbeville Mortuary Chapel with Reverend Mike Lee officiating. Graveside services will follow in the Wesley Chapel Methodist Church Cemetery, Highway 37, in Clay County, Georgia. The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 A.M. (C.S.T.) Thursday at the mortuary in Abbeville.


            Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 3054 McGehee Road, Montgomery, AL 36111 or to St. Jude’s Research  Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105. 


            Edward Cox was born and reared in Abbeville. He was a 1968 graduate of Abbeville High School and received a B.S. Degree in Horticulture from Auburn University.  In earlier years, Edward owned and operated Cox Greenhouses in Abbeville.  He was a member of the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, near Ft. Gaines. In the 1990’s, Edward volunteered with the Abbeville Recreation softball leagues and served as the head coach for the 1996 State Champion softball team, second runner-up.  Edward was preceded in death by his father, Julius Edward Cox, Jr. and his step-father, Robert C. Blalock.


            Surviving relatives include his wife, Connie Lindsey Cox, Ft. Gaines and Abbeville; three daughters, Gena Cox, (Mark Blackford), Dothan; Barbara Cox Jones (Eric), Headland; and Julia Cox-Pearson (Ken), LaGrange, GA; his mother, Elaine Robertson Blalock, Abbeville; a brother, Cullen Blalock (Barbara),Central, SC; six grandchildren, Matthew, Madison, and Connor Jones, and Avery, Karsen, and Drew Pearson; his special canine friends, “Baby” and “Rosie” and a yard full of cats.
