James Davis Preston, affectionately known as Dave to his friends and family, passed away on April 9, 2024, in Dothan, Alabama, at the age of 60. Born on September 27, 1963, in Alabama, Dave's larger-than-life personality and infectious humor touched the lives of all who knew him.

Dave graduated from Headland High School in 1981 and soon after joined the Army, where he honorably served for two years. His dedication to his country continued as he later served in the Air National Guard. Professionally, Dave was known for his strong work ethic, which was evident during his time with Daniel Construction at the Farley Nuclear Plant and as a Heavy Equipment Operator at Couch Construction

Survived by his loving fiancée, Julie Southerland, Dave's legacy of love and laughter lives on through his devoted daughters, Dixie (Cullen) Fowler and Shalania Preston; step-son, Chris Chaney; and his cherished grandchildren, Abygale, Jesse, and Halo. His memory will also be held dear by his sisters, Laura Money and Michelle (Curtis) Hillman; several aunts and uncles including a special uncle, Sam Goodwin; and his numerous nieces and nephews, who will all miss his presence deeply. Dave was predeceased by his parents, Durwood Preston and Barbara (Joe Ben) Brantley, as well as his brother, Joe Ben Brantley, Jr. He also leaves behind his K-9 friends, Sandy and Issy.

Those who knew Dave would say he was the life of the party, a true comedian who never met a stranger. His pride in his roots was unwavering, often sharing with others that he and his family hailed from Echo, Alabama. With a philosophy that life should be enjoyed to the fullest, Dave's motto, "If you can't laugh and carry on, what's the use in living," will resonate with his loved ones forever.

Dave's interests were as vibrant as his personality. He was a longtime resident of White Oak Shores, where he lived for 20 years, and attended Lakeside Christian Church community. His natural curiosity about people led him to frequently ask, "Where are you from?" eager to connect on a personal level, always sharing with pride that he was from the Echo Community.

Described by those who knew him best as funny, friendly, and loving, Dave's capacity to bring joy to any situation was unparalleled. His ability to tell a story, crack a joke, or lend a helping hand made him a beloved figure in his community and beyond.

The memory of James Davis Preston will be celebrated and held in the highest regard by all who had the pleasure of crossing paths with him. His spirit, characterized by laughter and love, will continue to inspire those he leaves behind. Dave's life was a testament to the joy that can be found in everyday moments and the importance of cherishing time with family and friends.

As we say goodbye to a man who was truly one of a kind, we take comfort in the knowledge that his legacy will live on through the countless stories, shared laughter, and the indelible impact he made on so many lives. James Davis Preston, "Dave," will be profoundly missed, but the memories he created will be treasured by his loved ones for generations to come.
