JAMES DOUGLAS “DOUG” BALKCOM

MIDLAND CITY, AL… James Douglas “Doug” Balkcom, a resident of Midland City, Alabama, passed away Friday morning, May 19, 2023, at his home. He was 82.

          Funeral services will be held 3:00 P.M. Monday, May 22, 2023 at Wright Funeral Home & Crematory Chapel with Reverend Ricky Sowell officiating. Entombment will follow in the mausoleum at Gardens of Memory Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4:00 until 6:00 P.M. Sunday afternoon, May 21, 2023, at Wright Funeral Home & Crematory. Wright Funeral Home & Crematory is in charge of the arrangements.

          Flowers will be accepted or contributions may be made to the Make A Wish Foundation, www.wish.org  or to Covenant Hospice, 1512 West Main Street, Dothan, Alabama, 36301 www.covenanthospice.org.

          Mr. Balkcom was born in Midland City, Alabama to the late Ivey Middleton Balkcom and Ruth Woodham Balkcom. He lived his entire life in Midland City, Alabama. He worked and retired after forty years with Alabama Power. He was also engaged in farming his whole life. He served his country in the U.S. Air National Guard. Mr. Balkcom was a 1959 graduate of Dale County High School.

          Along with his parents, he was also preceded in death by his sister, Dorothy Paler; and his brother, Gerald Balkcom.

          Leaving to cherish his memories are his wife, Gayle Balkcom; his sons, Kipling Shane Balkcom (Rebecca) and Kris Brandon Balkcom (Amy); his brother, Barto “B.M.” Balkcom (Carol); his grandchildren, Tanner Folger, Elizabeth Folger, and Sela Balkcom; and his nieces, Dr. Amanda Thompson, Jennifer Balkcom, Laura Benson, and Alicia King.

          Serving as active pallbearers will be Paul Hayes, Brooks Hayes, Gene Turner, Myron Johnson, Mike Cain, Jason Harris, and Benji Hicks. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be David Thomas, Buddy Skelton, John Paul Hayes, Joe Skipper, Ted Besecker, Donald Shipes, and Jim Grantham.
