James Lamax Tharpe, 85, a resident of Ozark, died Wednesday morning, December 12, 2018 at Noland Hospital.


Private services for the family will be held at a later date. Glover Funeral Home has charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to a favorite charity.


Mr. Tharpe was born July 21, 1933 in Dale County to Leroy and Gladys Whittle Tharpe and lived most of his life in Dale County. He was a 1953 graduate of Dale County High School in Ozark. He served in the U.S. Army in Korea and Vietnam for 21 years prior to his retirement. He was later employed with Civil Service at Fort Rucker for 15 years.


In addition to his parents he is predeceased by a granddaughter, Jamie Tharpe and two great-grandsons, Tyler Tharpe and Hunter Tharpe.


He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Enzell Smith Tharpe of Ozark; a son, Max Tharpe (Kathleen Richards), of Ozark; three daughters, Maxine Anderson (Steve) of Dothan, Donna Hilburn of Ozark and Bambi Crozier (John) of Ozark; two brothers, Lee Whittle Tharpe (Faye) and Gerald Lee Tharpe (Nell), all of Ozark; six grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews also survive.
