JANICE MCWATERS MCCRANEY


COLUMBIA, AL… Janice McWaters McCraney, a resident of the Pleasant Plains Community between Headland and Columbia passed away early Saturday morning, January 6, 2024 at her home surrounded by her family.  She was 79.


          Funeral services will be held 10:00 A.M. Monday, January 8, 2024, at the Pleasant Plains Baptist Church on County Road 22 and County Road 55, with Reverend Teddy Ward and Reverend Tom Chestnut officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Dr. Perry Mobley officiating.  The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 4:00 P.M., Sunday, January 7, 2024, at Wright Funeral Home & Crematory in Headland.  Wright Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.


          Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to Pleasant Plains Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, ? Nicole McEntyre, 2755 Bill Yance Road, Headland, Alabama, 36345, or to Southern Care Hospice, 2576 Montgomery Hwy, Unit 2, Dothan Alabama 36303.


          Mrs. McCraney was born on September 26, 1944, in Donalsonville, Georgia, to the late B.P. (Patis) McWaters and Carrie Andrews McWaters.  She was raised in Ashford, Alabama where she was a member of the Ashford High School Class of 1962.  She moved to the Pleasant Plains Community in 1965.  She was employed by Headland Elementary School for over 25 years and retired as the lunchroom manager in 2002.  She was a faithful member of Pleasant Plains Baptist Church and the Bertha/Joy Sunday School Class for over 55 years.  Mrs. McCraney previously served on the Hospitality and Benevolence Committee for many years. She was a kind soul who had a heart of gold that loved the Lord and was a prayer warrior.  She loved giving, serving, and helping others.


          She is preceded in death by her parents, a half-sister, Evelyn Hairston; her father-in-law, Willie Foy “Buck” McCraney; her mother-in-law, Thelma Davis McCraney; brother-in-law, Foy Edward McCraney; sister-in-law, Betty McCraney Floyd; and brother-in-law, Doug Floyd.


          “Miss” Janice is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, Thomas “Tony” McCraney; a daughter, Krista McCraney Shelley (Daniel); a son, Brian McCraney (Susie Muehl); all of Columbia; two grandsons, Matthew McCraney (Grace) and Kaleb Shelley (Katie); a granddaughter, Aubrey Maddox; and a great granddaughter, Daisy McCraney.  Additional survivors include a brother, Larue (Ann) McWaters of Shelbyville, Tennessee; and a sister-in-law, Betty Lou McCraney of Columbia, Alabama.  Special friends, Mary Yon, Judy Shelley, Welborn Johnson, Dennis and Beverly Teat, Pete and Mae Shelley, and Barry and Marilyn Singletary.  Also, several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.


          Serving as active pallbearers will be William Edmonson, Mark Fellows, Caleb Hughes, Ray McQuain, Billy O’Brien, and Ronnie Sykes.  Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Bertha/Joy Sunday School Class and the Ashford High School Class of 1962.


          Special thanks to Crystal Milner, Ashley Pippin, Zac Pitzing, the Bertha/Joy Sunday School class and Southern Care Hospice, especially Rosa Brackin, Theresa Riker, and Kevin Brannon.
