Jessie Merleane “Coonie” Newsome of Samson passed away on Sunday, January 6, 2019.  She was 94. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 9, 2019, in the First Freewill Baptist Church in Samson with Rev. Donald Gainey and Rev. James T. Davis, officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Pittman Funeral Home of Samson directing.  The family will receive friends prior to the service at the church on Wednesday, beginning at 1:00 p.m.  

 Mrs. Newsome was born in Geneva County, AL on September 21, 1924, to the late William Dolphus and Mollie Ann Burkett Paul. She was a lifetime member of First Freewill Baptist Church.  She loved to sing and was noted for her gift of singing alto.  Prior to her retirement, she worked in the textile mill for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Gene Newsome; three brothers, Ondruss Paul, Walter D. Paul, and O.P. Paul; and two nephews, Lamar Paul, and Johnny Mack Paul.

 She is survived by two brothers, Robert Paul (Sarah), and Janatious Paul (Mary); sister-in-law, Pat Paul; niece, Tywanna Hayes (David), nephew, Anthony Paul, all of Kinston; and numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews.
