Mr. Jimmy Joe Bottoms, age 82, a resident of Hartford, died Monday, November 20, 2023, at his residence surrounded by his family.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, November 25, 2023, at the Bottoms Garden Chapel in Hartford with the Reverend Scott Cox and Peggy Stewart officiating. Burial will follow in the Hartford City Cemetery with Bottoms Garden Chapel directing and assisted by Glover Funeral Home of Dothan.

The family will be receiving friends at Bottoms Garden Chapel in Hartford from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Friday.


Flowers will be accepted, or Donations may be made to the Luke Stewart Scholarship Fund at 216 W Jackson Street, Black, AL 36344.



Jimmy was born on July 25, 1941, in Geneva County, the son of Joe Ed Bottoms and Agnes Mae Ogburn Bottoms. He grew up in Black, Alabama, attended Black Jr. High and was a 1959 Geneva High School Graduate. Jimmy was a 1966 Graduate of the John A. Gupton School of Mortuary Science in Nashville, TN. He began his career in the funeral industry at Pittman Funeral Home, later at Ward-Wilson Funeral Home, and finally Garden Chapel Funeral Home in Hartford which he was able to purchase 45 plus years ago and later opened Bottoms Garden Chapel Funeral Home in Geneva. He was a Charter Member of the Hartford Rescue Squad beginning in 1968. He shared many accounts of running the hearse, as the ambulance, before the rescue squad was founded. Jimmy began working with the City of Hartford in 1980 and served as the Utilities Superintendent from 1990 until retiring in 2007. His favorite job was farming where he raised cattle, worked bees, and grew most all vegetables. He was a good husband, loving father, and the best papa. Jimmy served his community in many different capacities throughout his life. He had a servant’s heart and lived to help others. He leaves behind a beautiful legacy and big shoes to fill.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his loving wife of 63 years, Eileen Bottoms, Hartford; two sons, Tim Bottoms (Rose), Black; Joe Bottoms, Hartford; three grandchildren, Stewart Bottoms (Stephanie), Black; Shelby Lett (Desmond), Hartford; Mara Bottoms (Buckie), Black; seven great-grandchildren, S.J. Bottoms, Eli, Ian, Ellis, Ivy Jo Lett, and Fisher Grantham; two sisters, Betty Oneal (Doug), Lake Martin; Ginger Strickland, Black; two brothers-in-law, Danny Stewart (Judy), Black; Ronnie Stewart (Peggy), Hartford; several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Joey Dady, Reed Hales, Charlie Walding, William Birdsong, David Hendrix, and Jerome Key.
