Joan Hughes Odom, a longtime resident of Palmento Bay, FL., passed away Tuesday, March 8, 2022 after an extended illness.


Funeral services for Joan will will be Tuesday, May 10, 2022 at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, 11:00 am, located at 3245 S. County Rd. 81, Gordon, AL. Pastor John Mourey officiating. Ward Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to Pleasant Hill Baptist Church (Cemetery Fund).


Joan received her Bachelor’s degree from Auburn University and a Master’s degree in Education from Florida Atlantic University. She was a dedicated and passionate teachereducator for over 50 years and was National Board Certified. Joan received many awards throughout her career; National Teacher of the Year in Home Economics in 1992. She is in the 4H Alabama Hall of Fame. Joan was a board member of the Miami-Dade County Youth Fair, a 4H Club leader and an advocate and volunteer for Deering Estate.


She is a strong supporter of James E. Odom, Jr. Youth Memorial Fund at Wayside Baptist Church in Miami, FL.


Joan is preceded by her husband, James E. Odom, Jr. and son Edward (Eddie) Odom, III and her mother Thelma Butler Hughes.


She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Maria Odom and her granddaughters Stephanie Joan, Nicole Karina, Natasha Regina, and her daughter Mercy Villa. Other survivors include special friends, Rose and David Cannon, Grace Crouch as well as a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
