JoAnn Merrifield Motley, age 70 of Geneva, AL, passed away on May 9, 2020 after an extended illness.

She was born on October 4,1949 in Springfield, Illinois. She moved to the Paxton, Florida area at the age of 2 and graduated from Paxton High School in 1967. She attended Chipola Junior College and the University of West Florida. She graduated in 1971 with a major in Physical Education and a minor in Physical Therapy. She taught in the Geneva City School System for 30 years. During her teaching career, she was also the girls head volleyball and track coach. She pushed each and every student she taught to never give up and to work hard to achieve their goals. Along with working in the school system, she also worked with the Geneva Recreation Department for many years. To help in keeping her “kid connection” active, she worked with the football, basketball and baseballs programs. Those times spent at the ball fields were some of her happiest moments.

Her hobbies during her life included horseback riding, gardening, running, cooking, reading, and spending time with her “grand girls”.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Francis and Dorothy Merrifield; brother-in-law, Bill Perkins and the father of her daughter, Thomas D. Motley.

Survivors include her daughter, Stephanie Calhoun (Terry) of Hartford, AL; Sister, Mary Perkins of Laurel Hill, FL; Brother, John R. Merrifield (Ann) of Leslie, GA; granddaughters Emily and Addison Calhoun; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Sandy Jackson and Dr. Paola Bass.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 13, 2020 in the chapel of Warren Holloway Ward Funeral Home in Geneva with Gary Grantham and Tommy Helms officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery with Warren Holloway Ward Funeral Home of Geneva directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday beginning at 1:00 p.m.
