Obituary: Joe Max King

Joe Max King of Malvern passed away Monday, September 13, 2021. He was 72.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, September 17, 2021 at Malvern Baptist Church with Rev. Hosea Parker and Rev. Mark Anderson officiating and Sorrells Funeral Home of Slocomb directing. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends beginning at 12:00 p.m. and continuing until service time. Flowers will be accepted or contributions can be made to Malvern Baptist Church.

Joe Max was born November 8, 1948 to the late Virgil and Jonnell Napier King. He answered to many names over the years such as Daddy, Pepaw, The Corn Man, and Coach. He was an avid Bama fan, Redtop Fan, and devoted fan to his grandchildren. He was a staple amongst his community and a crowd favorite at the National Peanut Festival as the Roasted Corn Man. Most days you could find Joe Max swinging in the yard swing with his bride of 51 years and anyone who came by for a visit. He loved riding the roads of Geneva County, fishing, playing ball with the grands and taking care of his farm animals. He was a hard worker and over the years was employed by Furniture & Music Store, Mack Electrical, and AAA Cooper Transportation. He was the owner of K & C Auto Sales, Countryview Terrace Mobile Home Park and other various rental properties. Joe Max also retired from the Alabama Army National Guard with over 20 years of service to his country. He loved his church family, especially his Sunday School class.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Bruce King.

Survivors include his wife, Janice McNeil King; daughters, Tammy King and Melanie King Tillman (Raleigh); a son, Joey King (Dallas); grandchildren, Holton Helms, Dawson Hill, Morgan Tillman Dawkins (Austin), Madison Tillman, Mason Tillman (Sari), Landen King, Maddox King, and Paxton King; sisters Starla King Snellgrove (Jerry) and Carol King Woodall (Donnell); brothers Wayne King (Linda) and Rodney King; and very close family friend, Cruise Young.

Mr. King lived out his life’s purpose by lending a helping hand to those in need. He will be missed by all.
