John S. Hickey, Jr.

John Steven Hickey, Jr. passed away Wednesday, May 13, 2015 at his residence in Dothan. He was 87.

Mr. Hickey was born August 30, 1927 in Poplar Grove, AR to the late John Hickey, Sr. and Fannie Larkin. He joined the U.S. Navy during WWII serving as an aviation ordinance specialist and aerial gunner. After his service in the Navy, he flew one year as a crop-duster in the northwest then joined the Army helicopter flight training. Upon graduation he became an instructor pilot at Fort Sill, OK. After leaving the military, Mr. Hickey was hired as a civilian instructor at Ft. Rucker, AL retiring in 1982 as Chief of Safety. In later years, Mr. Hickey worked for the Houston County Sheriff’s Department as a computer system’s specialist.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Sue Hickey of Dothan; daughters, Mary Mikel (Bob) of Pleasant Grove, UT, Cathy Morgan of Dothan, and Terry Hickey of Palm Beach, FL; four grandchildren, Sarah Blair (Ryan), Blake Sweatt (Kelly), B. J. Mikel, and Josh Mikel (Jess); 11 great-grandchildren; best friend of 60 years, Dick Morgan; and his extended family.

Memorial services will be held 1 p.m. Monday, May 18, 2015 at Byrd Funeral Home Chapel on West Main Street.  The family will receive friends from 12-12:45 at the funeral home Monday prior to service time.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, or a charity of your choice.
