HEADLAND…Joseph Ray McClenney, II, also known as “Tince”, “Papo” or “Po”, went to be with Jesus peacefully Saturday morning, October 8, 2022, at his residence in Headland, surrounded by his loving family.  He was 94.


      A Service of Celebration will be held at 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, October 11, 2022, in the Worship Center of the First Baptist Church of Headland with Dr. Cecil M. Sanders, Jr., Reverend Norman C. Simmons, and Reverend Mr. Mike Wehner officiating.  Burial, with full military honors, will follow in the Newville Baptist Church Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 8:00 P.M. Monday, October 10, 2022, in the Worship Center of the First Baptist Church, Headland, AL.  Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements.         


      Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to Newville Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 13, Newville, AL 36353.


     Joe was born August 29, 1928, in the very defined area of Beat 7, District 11, Township 5, Range 27 of Newville in Henry County, Alabama.  He was the son of the late Joseph Ray McClenney and Laura Bell Holland McClenney. He was predeceased by a daughter Melanie Ann McClenney, a brother, Lafayette McClenney, and a sister, Evelyn Barber.  Joe graduated from Newville High School, home of the Bearcats, in 1949.  Following graduation, he served in the U.S. Army where he completed tours in the Korean Conflict and later during the Vietnam Era.  After his career in the Army, he retired, but then re-listed in the U.S. Air Force, where he served overseas in Turkey and the Philippines.  He had a long career and retired as a Sergeant Major First Class and was later a recruitment coordinator.  He later joined the civilian workforce and worked locally at the E&W Hardware. Joe was a member of the First Baptist Church of Headland.  He married his sweetheart, Elaine Woodham, on November 20, 1954, and built a wonderful life together.  They would have celebrated their 68th anniversary in November.  Together, they were very involved for many years with their church family, and enjoyed serving with the children’s ministries for over 50 years.


     Surviving relatives include his wife, Jewel Elaine Woodham McClenney, a son, Joseph Ray McClenney, III (Susan), Headland, AL, a brother, Frank McClenney (Jan) Mt. Dora, FL; five grandchildren, Mandi McClenney Sowell (Josh), Headland, AL, Joseph Seth Ray McClenney, IV (Aubrie), Dothan, AL.; Claire McClenney Smith (Billy) Dothan, AL; Cole McClenney (Ashleigh) Birmingham, AL; Meg McClenney South (Kelly), Birmingham, AL; six great-grandchildren, Anna Claire Sowell, Aiden Sowell, Clarke Ferguson, Lucie Ferguson, Decker Smith and John Bennett Smith. 


     Serving as active pallbearers will be Joseph Ray McClenney, IV (Seth), John Colter McClenney (Cole), Joshua William Sowell, Billy Decker Smith, Jon Kelly South, Jr., Aiden Joshua Sowell, and Clarke Lowell Ferguson.


     In addition to his immediate family, Papo had countless extended family, loved ones and friends whom he loved dearly. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to his wonderful caregivers, Nakeshia Brown, Quilla Sewell, Monica King, and hospice nurse, Angie Jones.
