Mrs. Julia Ann (Childress) Brown, 78, a resident of Dothan passed away Friday, December 30, 2023, at her residence following an extended illness.


Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, January 3, 2023, at Glover Funeral Home with Dr. Taylor Rutland officiating. A private family burial will follow at Memory Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 10:00 until 10:45 a.m.


In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to, First Baptist Church of Dothan, 300 W. Main Street, Dothan, AL 36301, or Enhabit Hospice, 3379 W. Main Street, Dothan, AL 36305.


Judy was born October 22, 1945, in Fayette, Alabama to the late Frank Garland & Betty Zane (McMillan) Childress. She spent the early years of her life there and was a 1964 graduate of Fayette County High School. Following graduation, she obtained her bachelor’s degree from Judson College in 1968. Judy was the manager of the State of Alabama Security Industrial Relations Board of the Brewton office, retiring in 1998 after 30 years of service.


Judy was a proud Tri-State Community Choir member and a past Escambia County DHR Board member. She had many involvements in her community including, being a past member of the Alabama Ladies Golf Association, and the Brewton Country Club Ladies Golf Association. Judy was a member of the First Baptist Church of Brewton, where she was an active member of the sanctuary choir for over 40 years before moving to Dothan. After moving to Dothan, she became a member of the First Baptist Church of Dothan, where she also sang in the choir. She will be deeply missed by all friends and family who knew her.


She is preceded in death by her parents; nephew, Gerald L. “Bubba” Childress, Jr.


She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Jerry Franklin Brown of Dothan; her daughter, Ashley Odom McGhee (Jason) of Dothan; Jennifer Brown Miles (Howard) of Birmingham, and JoEllen Reeves Brown (John West) of Destin, FL, and Jerry Franklin Brown, Jr. (Ellen) of Lewisville, TX; twin brother, Gerald L. Childress (Barbara) of Fayette, AL; a sister, Patricia Childress Jones, of Thorsby, AL; six grandchildren, Anna Bentley McGhee of Dothan, Charles Franklin McGhee of Dothan, Jarred Reeves Brown (Jennifer) of Coppel, TX, Samuel Ward Patton of Westerly, RI, Sarah Lynne Patton of Birmingham, and Benjamin Carroll Patton of Birmingham; four great-grandchildren, Harper Brown, Holland Brown, Henry Brown, and Hayes Brown; and several nieces and nephews.


The family would like to express their gratitude to the special caregivers, Rose Chitty & Carla McNealy, Flowers Hospital 4th Floor Nurses, and Enhabit Hospice & Home Health Care staff, for the love and compassion shown to their loved one during this time.
